You enjoy food. But cleaning up the dishes afterwards is a chore you’d rather avoid. Washing dishes is a necessary byproduct of eating food and while I haven’t figured out a way to eliminate the need to wash dishes I can share with you two things I use to make the task a little easier. I don’t mind doing dishes, especially after a delicious meal made by my beautiful bride who loves to cook, but there are two things that really irritate me about the whole process. Things I hate about washing dishes: When a dish covers the drain and the entire sink fills up with food laden grey water. When food goes down the drain. I’ve found two solutions to these problems that make dishwashing a more pleasant experience. First,…
Each year I gift my twin boys with one tool for their birthdays. Here’s why: Our society has become increasingly specialized, disposable, and planned obsolescence has led to tons of fixable items being trashed on a daily basis. As a parent it is my responsibility to teach my kids critical thinking skills in all areas of life. One of those areas is mending and repairing items when they break or creating new items out of available materials rather than discarding and always purchasing new. (more…)
For three years, I had the privilege to live overseas in Norway. It was a fantastic experience and one I recall fondly. It wasn’t drastically different from living in the US but one of the minor habit changes I had make was driving with vehicle headlights on at all times. Caution Sign in Norway - don't drive into the Fjord! Until driving overseas I had always used my headlights in a self-serving manner – to allow me to see where I was going – basically when it was dark as required by US law. (more…)

This’ll be quick, but it’ll change the way you reseal open bags in your kitchen. Those unitaskers called “chip clips”: they’re rubbish. Absolute, rubbish. Sure, they’re all flashy in their bright colors and sleek physique, some even sporting magnets so you can store them on your refrigerator. But they’re barely are strong enough to hold a thin sandwich bag shut, much less a fiesta size bag of tortilla chips from Taco Tuesday! (more…)
One thing I recall and remember enjoying about Christmas morning was being the gift-giver-outer when it was time to open presents. However, since they cannot read yet, they need help deciphering the “To:” and “From:” tags. (more…)
Several years ago, my grandfather was driving down the highway, hit a patch of ice, swerved off the road, rolled the car, and landed upside down in the ditch. His seatbelt performed flawlessly and he stayed in his seat – thankfully the only lasting injuries were being shaken up from the crash and a destroyed vehicle. Unfortunately, now that everything was over, the seatbelt was still doing its job – holding him in place. (more…)
I have a love - hate relationship with indoor playgrounds. My childhood memories of them are fond, my boys love them, and sometimes when the weather is too hot, too cold, too rainy, too-“insert rationale here” they can be a lifesaver in helping kids play out some of their limitless energy (seriously, where do they keep the extra power packs?).
